Earlier this year the Through Her Eyes Project participated in the 5th Annual WBEZ Global Activism Expo. It was a fantastic collection and display of people, discussions and organizations working to make a difference in the world. I was contacted at the event by Michael Tomko, a Northwestern University student, who was working on a class project to create a magazine for the expo. I spoke with him about the project and this is the profile he wrote which was featured in their proposed magazine. The piece starts with a wonderful quote from Nelson Mandela: “Sport has the power to unite people in a way that little else can. Sport can create hope where there was once only despair…It laughs in the face of discrimination. Sport speaks to people in a language they understand.”
